Motorboat Insurance
Motorboat Insurance is slightly different from the other types mentioned on this site. Motorboats are particularly prone to damage their propellers, shafts and rudders due to the design of most modern fast boats. These underwater attachments to the hull often hit objects such as floating debris, sand bars or rocks. These accidents are covered by insurers as standard. So make sure your quote for motorboat insurance does as well.
Although motorboat insurance is not a legal requirement in the UK, you should really protect your craft when it is in and out of the water. This summer you may well be visiting new cruising grounds and harbours. You will not be familar with the various underwater obstructions lying in wait for your motorboat. Propeller blades are very susceptible to just clipping the seabed or a rock, while you are manoeuvring alongside. So make sure your policy does cover such events. Also when ashore in the boatyard, your propeller(s) are also at risk! With this recession bighting hard on some peoples purses, theft of a lovely, shiny bronze propeller is more likely now than at anytime in the recent past. So if possible, remove it while you are ashore. It is not only expensive to replace but also difficult to source the exact pitch and diameter for your vessel.
If you intend to store your motorboat on the hard, make sure there is good security at the boatyard. As motorboats have an abundance of fuel in their tanks and often carry extra fuel in portable containers, this is also an attraction to theives. Take all fuel containers home with you, if possible. Try and plan to use up most of your fuel towards the end of the season. Diesel in particular does not store well in a half full tank over the winter, as condensation and other impurities get into the diesel making it a potential problem the following season. If you have fuel tanks try and ensure the filler caps are locked. Many quotes for motorboat insurance policies do not cover you for loss of fuel due to theft, so check this out as well.
In the cockpit of your motorboat ensure all navigational equipment is disconnected and stored at home of in the locked cabin or locker. Do not entice theives to board your motorboat with the lure of some high tech electronic gear on show!
