Dinghy Insurance

Dinghy Insurance is necessary due to the potential risks that your dinghy is constantly exposed to.  For example, there are the obvious ones like theft and damage due to a collision with another water craft. However, other risks are fire, capsize and collision with obstacles afloat such as channel markers, metal mooring buoys and quaysides.  Unseen obstructions such as rocks can also cause major damage to your precious dinghy!

If you are a member of a dinghy sailing club, then you will require dinghy insurance as collision with another sailing dinghy or buoys will no doubt occur sooner or later. Your sailing club may suggest a broker or insurer to give you a quote for dinghy insurance,  that they use year after year. However, it is often useful to enquire further as you may be able to get even better quote for cover with another insurer, for a cheaper premium.

Most insurance companies will offer new for old cover, for sails and spars that are damaged. They will also offer a Comprehensive all year round cover which will be a comfort to know when stored ashore or during transporting to and from the waterside. The policy should cover loss or damage due to theft, vandalism, malicious damage or even fire.

Your quote for dinghy insurance should be underwritten by a large respectable firm such as Lloyds of London, for your own peace of mind. A large sum of money such as £3,000,000 of Third Party Cover is usually included as a matter of course in your policy. Remember there are many accidents every season and these cause severe damage to dinghies and other craft without insurance. You could be liable for the cost of repair to these damaged craft, if you are involved!
