Marine Insurance

May 28th, 2009

If you intend to use your boat, jet ski or windsurfer board out on the water, you should have marine insurance of some kind.  Marine insurers split the type of insurance into categories.  For example, yacht insurance would be different from windsurfer insurance.  Each category has its own risks and unique requirements.  For this reason this site has a page devoted to one particular group.

Although in the UK there is no legal requirement for marine insurance, it would be unwise to set off without it.  In fact, many places insist on you having at least Third Party Liability Cover before they will allow you to, say, use their slipway to launch your boat.  Certainly sailing clubs will insist on your vessel being insured if you are using their moorings or intend racing round the buoys on a weekday evening.  So nowadays, no matter where you go, you will be expected to be insured to use your boat.

With many people now using marinas to moor their vessel all year round, accidents can occur when boats are being manoeuvred in confined spaces.  Also if your boat is left on a swing mooring in a bay or river, there are dangers.  Not only damage from other boats but from theives boarding your vessel and stealing equipment.  In such circumstances it is better to be insured.

Jet Skis are very popular because they provide a thrill to those who thrive on speed.  Unfortunately, speed combined with waves and enthusiasm sometimes leads to accidents and collisions.  So Jet Ski insurance would be a wise choice for those keen to get on the water to experience these exhilarating moments!

Recent years have seen an increase in the number of people buying motorboats for the first time.  Many first time skippers do take some kind of course to instruct them in boat handling etc.  However, because there is no legal requirement to complete such courses, not everyone does make time to do them.  So remember when you are out there at sea or lying against the quayside and a large fast cabin cruisers rushes by or attempts to moor up, it could be their first time at such a manoeuvre.  Your boat could be on the receiving end of an over enthusiastic skipper, whose throttle happy!  Believe me, I have seen it many a time and although it is entertaining for onlookers it is a hassle for both parties involved, especially if they are not insured!

Most marine insurance quotes that are accessed here are simple and  straightforward  to complete.  Make sure you mention as much as possible about your needs and requirements.  Be clear about when your vessel is insured for example,  in use on the water and also if or when you need to take her out and store ashore on the hard.   If you have a dinghy or windsurfer board, ensure you are storing it in a secure locked place away from the temptation of theft.

On the following pages you will be able to find more information about marine insurance and get access to company quotations that will suit your needs.
